The Callbecks Ltd. family is expanding.

The Summerside-based company, which operates Callbecks Home Hardware Building Centre and Callbecks Home Furnishing, has acquired Salisbury Home Hardware Building Centre in Salisbury, N.B.

The deal was scheduled to close June 29.

Callbeck’s General Manager Duane MacDonald said the company has been considering the possibility of expanding for some time and when this opportunity came up they pursued it. The Salisbury Home Hardware was previously owned by the Colpitts and Bos families who are looking to retire and don’t have any younger members interested in taking over.

“We’re excited about it,” said MacDonald, speaking from the Salisbury location.

“We really like that it was a family business here, they have a lot of long-term staff.”

MacDonald added that the company has hired a couple of new people at the Summerside store to help manage the logistics of running both franchises. He also said their increased buying power should help both businesses stay competitive in their markets.

There are 11 staff at the Salisbury store.

All in all, it was a good fit and they’re happy to get to work, said MacDonald.
