On Wednesday, November 30th, the Provincial Government under the leadership of Dennis King, announced a plethora of new housing and efficiency programs.
These announcements include the following:
- An expansion of the eligibility of a government-funded Salvation Army program that provides assistance for home heating expenses with individuals with incomes of $45,000 or less or families with incomes of $60,000 or less now qualifying.
- A one-year $50-million financing program that will offer two per cent financing to developers and non-profits seeking to build rental housing.
- A five-year tax rebate program for developers that construct new rental housing.
- Plans for 39 units of modular seniors housing on Lefurgey Avenue in Summerside.
- The renovation of Smith Lodge in Charlottetown to accommodate 13 additional transitional housing units.
- Funding for heat pump installation at community centres and churches.
- An interest-free loan program for the purchase of efficient home heating equipment for homeowners.
Noticeably absent was any mention of a plan provide assistance to landlords who have said they are struggling with the rising cost of living.
