1. How long have you been living and working in Summerside?
2. What was your journey to landing as co-owners of Kool Breeze Farms?
Our journey as co-owners of Kool Breeze Farms is deeply rooted in the legacy of our parents Douglas and Christine, grandparents, and relatives, who instilled on both of us a love for the land and a spirit of entrepreneurship that drives us to carry their vision forward with pride and determination. While our paths diverged momentarily, Stephanie’s pursuit of Greenhouse Management at NSAC and Tara’s journey towards her CPA after obtaining a business degree at UPEI, our hearts remained firmly rooted at Kool Breeze Farms. Armed with Stephanie’s expertise in horticulture and Tara’s insight in business, we joined forces to breathe new life into our family’s legacy. Today, as co-owners, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Uncle Ian, nurturing not just plants but also the bonds of family and community that make Kool Breeze Farms truly flourish.
3. Tell us one of your most memorable experiences while working at Kool Breeze Farms?
Stephanie : My most cherished memory at Kool Breeze Farms was the inaugural Scarecrow Festival, where the community, young and old, gathered to support the event, creating a joyous, family-filled day that left a lasting impression on her and our community, all while learning about agriculture among the festivities.
Tara : My most memorable experience at Kool Breeze Farms dates to my childhood when my parents would discuss potential locations for a future dairy bar. One Friday evening drive stand’s out vividly, as we drove around, stopping at various locations in Summerside and envisioning the possibilities. Remarkably, over 20 years later, our dream became a reality with Kool Breeze Ice Cream Barn.
4. What would be a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about working for Kool Breeze Farms?
Not only we are open year-round, offering the beauty of our greenhouse products in every season, but we’re also egg producers, selling farm fresh eggs from our farm gate-year-round, providing our community with wholesome, farm-fresh goodness.
5. What is the work culture like at Kool Breeze Farms?
Our work culture is about fostering a fun and family-oriented environment rooted in collaboration, creativity, and a deep respect for farming here on Prince Edward Island. Every day feels like a masterpiece of colors and scents as we come together to nurture our plants, produce fresh eggs, and create memorable experiences for our community, cultivating a sense of belonging within our team.
6. Why did you choose Summerside to live and work?
We are the 5th generation to farm this land which is a testament to our family’s enduring commitment to Summerside and our agricultural heritage. But Summerside isn’t just a place; it’s a way of life. From its tranquil shores to its vibrant community spirit, Summerside embodies everyone we hold dear. The opportunity to live and work amidst such natural beauty and close-knit camaraderie is a privilege we wouldn’t trade for anything.
7. What is one business that you wish Summerside had?
One business that we’ve often dreamed of seeing in Summerside is a Discovery Centre, a place where locals and visitors alike can delve into the wonders of nature, agriculture, and science, fostering curiosity and learning in our community.
8. If someone was thinking about moving to live and work in Summerside, what advice would you give them?
We are passionate about fostering a vibrant and active community right here in our city. We encourage everyone to embrace the opportunities for recreation and activities, whether is through volunteering, joining a local organization, or simply pursuing their hobbies and interest in Summerside’s welcoming embrace.
