What is your name and name of the business?

My name is Paulette Barke, owner of the ladies boutique Go Girl Fashions and shoe store, Shoe Craze

How long has your business been operating, and how long has it been operating in the Greater Summerside Area?

I have been in business for 15 years, and 9 years in the Greater Summerside Area.
We opened up the shoe store called Shoe Craze in April 2023

What inspired you to start this business, and what made you choose your location?

I was born and raised on PEI. After college I moved to Calgary where I met my husband who owned a printing company.

I LOVE Fashion! and have always wanted to own a ladies boutique.
Upon turning 50, I thought what do I want to do when I grow up … and thought now was the time to pursue my dream of opening a ladies boutique on PEI

I started in November 2005 in what was going to be a clothing party at the cottage to doing a full “Pop Up “store at the Credit Union Place in Summerside.
After a few years of doing the pop up’s I realized it was time for a “brick & mortar “

I choose Summerside because I grew up in Searletown, close to Bedeque and we always shopped in Summerside.
I saw great potential in the Summerside area and it’s growth and in May 2015 we opened at 215 Wyatt Crescent, across the street from Callbecks Home Hardware.

Can you tell me about your business and what products / services you offer?

We are a full ladies clothing and shoe boutique. We offer designer clothing and footwear that are made in Canada, Europe and around the world. We want to bring the women something different and unique in fashion.
I have amazing staff that are very knowledgeable in the fashion trends who enjoy helping women find that perfect outfit for any occasion.

How has the local community responded to your business?

We have been very well received in the Summerside and surrounding areas on PEI. Women love our boutique. They meet friends here and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere with no pressure to purchase.

What do you love most about being a business owner in the Greater Summerside Area?

I love the feel of a smaller community atmosphere, although Summerside is growing, the people are friendly and understand the importance of supporting the local businesses.
It is also easier to get involved in the different organizations and it feels great to be part of that and to give back to the Community.

Are there any specific challenges or advantages to running a business in the Greater Summerside Area?

There are always challenges in running any business.
One challenge we have is bringing awareness of who we are, what we offer and our location. We are always looking at different avenues to promote our business to our current and potential new customers.
We do send out weekly emails promoting new products and any events we are having which helps.

An advantage in owning a business in the Greater Summerside Area is being able to build those relationships. Some women just feel comfortable popping in to say Hi and see what’s new in the fashion trends with no pressure to buy. They love the atmosphere and can enjoy a cup of coffee while visiting.
Another advantage is being able to engage with the other businesses through the local events to encourage and be encouraged. It’s also great being part of the local charities here and giving back.

Any exciting upcoming projects or initiative that your business is working on?

2025 will be our 10th year anniversary in business here in the Greater Summerside Area. We will be planning a celebration for sure.

Tell us the most unique feature of your business?

A unique feature of Go Girl Fashions is the variety of styles in our clothing and footwear that we offer to our customers.
We want every woman to look and feel special when they leave our boutique. Helping women be their best version of themselves through Fashion.

Can you share a success story or a memorable experience related to your business in the Greater Summerside area?

Our Fashion Shows have always been successful. It’s a fun, relaxing evening out for the women. And most recent we were invited to do the fashion show for the fundraising gala for Life House, a great organization opening a women’s shelter here in Summerside.
We are also part of 100 Women Who Care. Being able to support these organizations is a great feeling.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a business, and why should they choose the Greater Summerside area?

My advice to new entrepreneurs:
“If you can dream it, you can do it “
Don’t let your fears hold you back. Be willing to make sacrifices.
There will be difficult times but also rewarding times.
If you fall, get up, brush yourself off, stay focused, have fun and you will succeed.

Why choose the Greater Summerside Area?

Summerside is a growing city with great potential. It has a lot to offer and great resources to be part of. The Chamber of Commerce is a great place to start to any new business owners.
But Summerside still has that small community feeling with great support from the people, and other businesses.
Summerside is a very inviting city to realize your dreams of being a business owner.

I love it here and glad I choose Summerside to open our ladies clothing and shoe boutique. It’s been great.
