A BizVoice interview with Filip Hrga

Meet Filip

“Summerside – Prepare to be charmed… it’s a wonderful city and a great place to live and work. “

1. How long have you been working in Summerside?

I have been working here since April 2020. My Partner and I ended up building a home in North Tryon near family. I commute every day and just enjoyed a lovely dinner at Brothers2 on the weekend and followed that up with the Lennie Gallant Christmas show at the Harbourfront Theatre!

2. What was your journey to landing as an Associate Lawyer for Cox & Palmer?

Well, my partner and I took over a law firm, McLellan Brennan Hrga Barristers & Solicitors, following our arrival. I owned and managed the firm which sat on the corner of Central St and Fitzroy for a few years (dangerously close to Holman’s Ice Cream Parlour and South Central Kitchen I might add…). We then merged with Cox & Palmer Law in January of this year

3. Tell us one of your most memorable experiences while owning and operating a business in Summerside?

Interestingly enough, one of my favourite components was taking our team over to Holman’s Ice Cream Parlour almost every week during the warmer months. We ended up being their top customer in 2022. Ken Meister, the former owner of Holman’s Ice Cream Parlour, came over a few weeks before they closed for the winter in 2022 to tell us our top spot was being threatened, so naturally we made a few more trips before we closed our office for the holidays! But in general it was the great local business community that I met and got to work with, some of whom I still keep in touch with today and enjoy seeing around at Chamber and other community events.

4. What would be a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about working for Cox & Palmer?

Every month we have an office surprise where a social committee surprises us with some gesture or treat, and usually themed if there are any holidays that month.

5.  What is the work culture like at the Cox & Palmer?

It’s lovely. Everyone is very collegial. Some colleagues have “treat” drawers at their desks which helps me with my sweet tooth cravings! But overall everyone here is great, we cover for one another when personal lives need to take precedence during the workday, and we work as a team to deliver high quality legal services to our Island communities.

6. Why did you choose Summerside for work?

Initially it was because my former partner Bloyce V. McLellan had ran his practice here before my partner and I bought it from him. We also knew it was a growing city and we thought it would continue to grow. But it didn’t take long to realize that it was a great place to be for many reasons. The city has so much to offer for its size, including the Harbourfront theatre, the CUP, and the existing and new restaurants opening. The people, from business owners, to residents, to everyone else, have been so friendly that we would choose Summerside again over and over.

7. What is one business that you wish Summerside had?

Hmmm… I would love to see a grocery store located in or near the downtown area.

8. If someone was thinking about moving to live and work in Summerside, what advice would you give them ?

Prepare to be charmed… it’s a wonderful city and a great place to live and work. Also depending on where they are coming from and their needs perhaps a general heads up on healthcare and housing.
