Inside the Exciting World of the Silverfox!
A BizVoice interview with Chauncy Perry
Meet Chauncy
“Summerside is a growth market so there is a lot of potential for the future. “
1. What is your name and how long have you been working for the Silver Fox?
My name is Chauncy Perry and I’ve been in my role since October 2023
2. What was your journey to landin as the Marketing and Events administrator for the Silverfox?
I have a deep background in marketing but spent most of the last seven years managing and owning floral design businesses. This fall I decided I was ready for a change of pace and wanted to get back into marketing full-time, and basically the day I started looking for jobs the Fox posted a job listing that read like my ideal position. I applied Tuesday, interviewed Thursday and accepted an offer Friday – it was a very quick process.
3. What would be a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about working for the Curling Club?
We host a LOT of events. On an average month we run fourteen of our own events ranging from trivia to live music in our restaurant/bar. In the winter we host curling bonspiels almost every weekend from November through the beginning of April, and in the summer our yacht club hosts regattas and socials. Once the curling ice comes out we repurpose that space for bigger concerts and banquets. We also rent out space for conferences and meetings, weddings, reunions, basically anything that we can fit in the building.
Having so many different things going on here means there’s rarely a boring day at work. It’s a lot to take in as a new hire but it definitely keeps things interesting!
4. What is the work culture like at the Silver Fox?
Not to sound clichéed but we’re very much a family here. We have a large staff of about 50 employees but we all make an effort to get to know each other as people, celebrate each others’ achievements at work and personally, spend time together even when we’re off the clock, and aren’t afraid to jump in and help each other out whenever we can (on a busy week you might find me behind the bar, the finance manager waiting tables, and even the GM cooking in the kitchen!). As a non-profit we also have a very active management board and about 300 members, many of whom are active volunteers for our events and projects, so there is a wide diversity of viewpoints and a lot of opportunity to learn from a very broad base of experience.
5. Why did you choose Summerside to live and work?
My family is from the Tignish area. I love West Prince but the reality is that when your experience is in a niche field it can be very difficult to find work in a more rural region. The population and economy just aren’t there yet, and the jobs that do come open are highly competitive. Summerside has more opportunities in that sense but still retains the small-town feeling that people are looking for when they think “PEI”. I lived in small towns in Ontario but worked in cities, and the relaxed pace here is growing on me the longer I’m back. I’m very social so I couldn’t imagine myself working somewhere completely rural, but also wouldn’t want to work somewhere as busy as downtown Charlottetown. Summerside is a great middle ground.
6. What is one business that you wish Summerside had ?
This is a tough question – I can’t decide between a good quality menswear store and a Taco Bell. 😀
7. If someone was thinking about moving to live and work in Summerside, what advice would you give them ?
Like anywhere else Summerside has its good and bad. Make sure you have a place to live lined up before you move here because our housing market is a bit rough, and be prepared to wait a while to get a doctor if you need one. But it’s still a great area to live and work, and is a growth market so there is a lot of potential for the future. The pace may take some getting used to if you’re from away but you’ll adjust if you give it a chance!
