The Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce is encouraging members to offer feedback regarding three potential amendments to the PEI Employment Standards Act involving different types of leaves for employees, as well as your suggestions regarding draft regulations required to implement Bill 116. The proposed changes are outlined below.
Proposed employment law amendments related to:
- Reducing the wait time for eligibility for sick leave from six months to three months;
- Increasing compassionate care leave to 28 weeks; and
- Increasing parental leave to protect the employment of persons opting for the 18-month EI benefit.
Bill 116: An Act to Amend the Employment Standards Act draft regulations:
- Government is also seeking feedback on the draft regulations of Bill 116: An Act to Amend the Employment Standards Act;
- The Government of Prince Edward Island proposed regulations to define key terms, as well as eligibility for leave, the purpose of the leave, confidentiality and disclosure, calculating leave usage, and what evidence will establish right to take leave.
How to provide input:
- The public input gathered will be included in the final draft regulations that cabinet will consider. It will also help to determine if there is support for making other amendments to the act.
