Did you know that Prince Edward Island is host to the largest disc golf event in the history of Canada as well as the #3 ranked course in the entire world? Over the last 3 years PEI has become a hub for disc golf activities in North America and the future looks even better.
If you haven’t heard of disc golf the game is easy to understand and a tone to fun to play. The game uses the basic rules of traditional golf but instead of using a club to hit a ball into a hole, disc golfer throw special ‘frisbees’ into large metal targets. The island currently has 3 championship courses, Bonshaw, Middleton, and Rose Valley. There is also a free public course in Cornwall with one at least one more course opening up on the eastern part of the island in 2020. On average each course sees over 100 players per week during warmer weather, and 3 of the 4 courses see over 40 players per week all winter. Since 2001 disc golf courses and players have grown by 9% annually and show no signs of slowing down.
Last years national championship brought in over 300 players from 5 countries, 17 states, and every province in Canada and generated over $200,000 of revenue for the local island economy. This years event is projected to do the same. Between Sept 6-13 this year over 260 players will once again travel from off-island to join the over 50 islanders to take in all the sights and local culture has to offer. As a part of registration for our National Championship each player receives a ‘players pack’ full of goodies. In many events around the world these packs are filled with disc golf discs, bags, and other accessories. For our event we would like to put a major focus on island goods and are looking for local businesses who would be interested in sponsoring holes, donating items, or wholesaling products that can go into the hands of our players.
Our event generates international press and all professional rounds are filmed by 2 different film crews. Last years final round has been viewed over 105,000 times on Youtube. This event is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the world and showcase the best of what the island has to offer.
To get a sense of some of the players experience please take a look at the attached video.
These events are also open to public spectating and we would love to see more islanders take in the action live.
